The Supreme Court, currently has been leaning towards not accepting the case for Nestle and Cargill. The lawsuit claims that the companies knowingly bought cocoa beans from farms in Africa that used child slave labor.

The case is acting out the 1789 Alien Tort Statute made by Congress, which doesn’t allow foreign citizens to sue in U.S. courts for human rights abuse. The justices are being asked to rule on whether it permits lawsuits against American companies.

Attorney of Nestle, Neal Katyal argued that the Alien Tort Statute doesn’t apply to the lawsuit because the alleged damage “occurred halfway across the globe.”

If the court were to accept Nestle and Cargill’s arguments, that could further limit the ability of victims of human rights abuses abroad to use U.S. courts to sue.

Apparently, the case has been going on for 15 years. Six adult citizens of Mali, referred to as John Does, says that as children they were taken from their country and forced to work on cocoa farms in neighboring Ivory Coast. They said that they worked 12 to 14 hour days and were given little food and were beaten if they were working slow.

Human rights advocates are seeking to hold Nestle USA and Cargill responsible for the mistreatment of children.

The citizens of Mali says that Minneapolis based Cargill and the American arm of Switzerland based Nestle “aided and abetted” their slavery by buying cocoa beans from farms that used child labor and other things. They want to bring a class action lawsuit on behalf of themselves and the thousands of other former child slaves who were working in those conditions.

Both companies, Nestle and Cargill, claimed that they have taken steps to combat child slavery and have denied any wrongdoing.

President-elect, Joseph ‘Joe’ Biden has begun working on some of his promises by saying there should be an immediate congressional action on student loans, after Democrats suggested he should sign an executive order to forgive student debt.

A Biden official has told Fox News that Biden is calling for immediate action that will forgive $10,000 of student loan debt for borrowers as part of the coronavirus relief package. In order for the action to proceed, action would have to be taken in through Congress.

Student loan borrowers haven’t had to make payments since March due to COVID-19 but the hold off on payments is set to expire on December 31, unless President Donald Trump or Congress act to extend it.

If neither push the deadline back, millions of student loan payments will have to begin payments for their student loans a couple of weeks before President-elect Joe Biden takes office on Inauguration day, January 20, 2021.

If Biden reinstates the student loan recovery, it could possibly create issues for borrowers as well as student loan processors.

Senator Minority Leader of New York, Charles ‘Chuck’ Schumer ultimately wants Biden to bypass Congress and cancel billions of dollars in student loan debt through an executive action. “I have a proposal with Elizabeth Warren that the first $50,000 of debt be vanquished, and we believe that Joe Biden can do that with the pen as opposed to legislation.” Schumer spoke to The Ink.

Schumer has urged Biden to adopt the FDR-style agenda during his first 100 days in office which will include strengthening labor unions, changing the tax code so that it benefits workers rather than companies, passing a broad infrastructure bill, adopting a climate agenda, and taking into account racial injustice.

Some have argued that using power to get rid of college debt for students exceeds the president’s authority granted by Congress because canceling student loan debt would add to the nation’s growing national deficit that totals $3.1 trillion for the 2020 fiscal year.

Student loan debt has doubled over the past decade, nearing $1.7 trillion. Roughly one in six American adults owes money due to federal student loan debt, which is said to be the largest amount of non-mortgage debt in the U.S.

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell stated that student loan debt has been a major hindrance in America’s “economic life.”

Joe Biden is here to help those who are in real trouble such as the individuals that have to choose between paying rent or paying their student loans. It is still unsure when those with student loans will have to resume payments, however with December 31st quickly approaching many are awaiting the outcome of this issue.

Third time’s a charm because Joseph ‘Joe’ Biden has been selected the United States 46th president along with our first Black female Vice President Kamala Harris.

Although Joe Biden is one of our oldest presidents to be elected at 77, Biden plans to make an effort to restore political normalcy and a spirit of national unity to confront raging health and economic crises.

History is continuing to be made because Biden will be the first presidential candidate to receive over 74 million votes in a presidential election.

Biden pledges to “to rebuild the soul of America, to rebuild the backbone of this nation, the middle class and to make America respected around the world again,” and stated that he does not see blue states and red states, but only the United States.

Along with making history, Biden’s wife Jill Biden will become the only first lady to work a paid job outside the White House and to have a doctorate degree. Dr. Jill Biden plans to continue teaching at her full-time job as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College.

“If we get to the White House, I’m gonna continue to teach… It’s important, and I want people to value teachers and know their contributions, and lift up the profession,” Jill Biden says.

Kamala Harris is the daughter of an Indian and Jamaican immigrant and continues to inspire girls. “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last, because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities” spoke V.P. Kamala Harris. With Kamala’s name meaning “lotus” which is the empowerment of women, she plans to continue making history.

Vice President Kamala Harris ran a thoughtful campaign based on unity and honor and proceeds to continue the fight for the rights of all communities. She previously introduced and cosponsored legislation to raise wages for working people, reform our broken criminal justice system, make healthcare a right for all Americans, address the epidemic of substance abuse, support veterans and military families, and expand access to childcare for working parents.

Husband of Harris, Douglas Emhoff, is the first second gentleman of the United States of America. Emhoff is an entertainment attorney and a partner at DLA Piper, a global law firm. Throughout the campaigning and election, Douglas put in a leave of absence from the firm to support his wife in her endeavors.
